UK and Russia discuss aircraft 'incursions'

British military officials have held talks with their counterparts in Moscow over "incursions" of Russian aircraft around the UK, the defence secretary has said.

Michael Fallon said the talks aimed to find ways of heading off any "miscalculation or accident".

Russia has not crossed into UK airspace but has flown close to the boundary.

Last month Typhoon jets were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth to intercept two Russian planes over the Atlantic.

The Russian Tu-160 Blackjack bombers were escorted by the RAF until they were clear of the "British area of interest".

    Turkey's method more effective.

Why is this even news? The Russians prod us, we prod them. The US prods Russia, Russia prods the US. It happen's all the time - how else would you test a countries response time to scramble their jets?

From what I've heard (and I've not double checked it) Turkey's rules of engagement mean that if you come within 15km if the border they shoot you down. I.e. you're still in friendly sovereign territory by several miles, but you get taken out.

Try asking one of the guys on this forum who works for the MoD.

It's not something we advertise. How is anyone supposed to know.

Agreed but I do like heating in winter.

According to Private Eye, the French are helping us search for a Russian sub in British waters. Liam Fox scrapped our own anti-sub capability in 2011.
