Unilever to shrink Magnum and Cornetto in bid to cut calories

Unilever is to cut the size of British ice-creams including Magnum, Cornetto, Ben & Jerry’s and Feast by up to a third to bring them all under 250 calories.

From the spring, Ben & Jerry’s single portion tubs will be reduced from 150ml to 100ml, a 33% reduction in size. The price, however, will only drop by 26% – from £2.04 to £1.50, according to a report in the trade journal, the Grocer.

There will be smaller drops in the size of other ice-cream treats with a Magnum Almond, the most calorific of the brand’s choc-ices on sticks, dropping from 110ml to 100ml, a Magnum Classic will drop from 120ml to 110ml and just 2ml will be sliced off a Feast Chocolate, taking it down to 90ml.

Bless. They pretend that we won't notice that they're upping the price by volume, even though they know we do notice, because come summer the customers will be forced to pay it anyway to stop the kids whinging.

I often wonder how those who loudly and proudly proclaim their love of free market capitalism respond to this kind of thing. "Hot damn! Those bastards are taking me for a **** and wringing more cash from me for less! I love that!" never seems to be their full-throated response, does it?

It's going to be cheaper per kid though... as you can see - they care!

These price hikes are relatively trivial, they are necessarily limited by competition. If a Socialist state, with not a clue about how commerce works, imposed price controls it would be much worse. Would you seriously prefer to live in Venezuela?

Would you prefer to live on the Cayman Islands were it costs £8.50 for Fish Fingers and there is no welfare state so you have to hope for a nice millionaire to pay for your local hospital?

                    Both extremes are bad.
