To whit, regardless of the outcome, we'll then have Hillsborough Ambulance chasing lawyers for the next few years looking out for huge payouts from non-scouse tax payers (Nothing new there then - Ed. ) or the 'it's a cover-up, we want to do it again then, won't they hey!' pantomime.


I wish they'd only cover this in Merseyside. No-one gives a tulip anywhere else.

They should hold a public enquiry into why there's been so many public enquiries.

I'd potentially say that there's two different cases to argue, one each for those killed before and after the poor response decisions taken by SYP.

The first case was, regardless of what people say, a terrible accident caused by a variety of factors. The ground was a death trap waiting to happen, but the lack of CCTV back in the day contributed to both the violence culture and the "jibbing in" culture perpetuated the need for pens/paddocks. Ten minutes before kick off and the crowds wanted to get in to watch an FA Cup semi final. Many didn't have tickets. Someone opens a gate to alleviate the pressure at the gate to prevent a crush there. Naturally, the ticketless ones in the crowd see this as fair game for getting in to see the match. No match officials (police, SWFC, etc.) were there to point fans into the empty pens at the side.

The second case was the failed response and ensuing cover up by the authorities. Even commentator Graham Beecroft was dismissed as lying to cover this up and Beeky's integrity was second-to-none. Of course, this is all alien to those who don't remember when the papers controlled popular opinion before the internet. They couldn't have got away with it in a day with so many camera phones pointed at them.

Personally, I feel sorry for the person who gave the command to open the gate because they thought they were saving lives by mitigating the crush outside the Leppings Lane end.

I wish Liverpool FC nothing but ill fortune on the pitch but no supporter should go to a game and not come home.

Exactly the same thing happened at Burnden Park in 1946. Bloke concerned about the safety of his kid opened a gate and everyone flooded in, 33 crushed to death....

It was (for the time) properly policed with fans being lined up a distance away from the turnstiles, with tickets being checked. A year later and Match Commander Duckenfield had never taken charge of a football match before let alone a high profile one. He got the job approx 10 days before the game. He has admitted that he lied during the previous inquest.
