    It explains a lot when every day I am presented reports from semi illiterate subordinates, full of basic mathematical & grammatical errors

                yes.

                If standards fall where you have a standards board then necessarily the Board has failed.

                If we stay in the EU (or even if we don't) I would like to see our children being educated to an internationally recognised standard that people trust that used to be O levels.Now I think the only way to pull it back is to sign everyone up for the International Baccalaureate. That would make the teachers sweat.

                    Possibly true, but today's kids are also educated in skillz wot we wozn't. e.g public speaking, presentation, how to shoot up etc.
