Taking more than alotted holiday time as a permie.

Yo brexiteers, anyone knows what the law is like about taking unpaid holidays on top of what comes with the permanent job package.

I am enquiring for Ireland, but I guess it is the same as with the UK.

I spoke to this big IT company in Dublin and they are saying there is no practice employees to take more than the quote of 25 days per yaer. Poor sucky bastards.

Question is how can I legally take more than that, say 40 days a year, without being paid on the extra days...

Now that contracting has almost completely gone to hell, I need to check my permie options..

Apart from in certain specific circumstances (eg parental leave, adoption leave etc) you have no legal right to take unpaid leave - unless it's in your contract.

I've done it when I was permanent - I took a month off unpaid because I needed to get away from the place, and I agreed that with my manager (any longer and it needed board approval). As it happened, I then ended up taking another month off at the end of the year, plus two weeks paid paternity leave, plus the rest of my holiday entitlement - so I only worked about nine months of the year that year.

That gave me a taste for not working 12 months...

        Permieireland.com actually :-)

Don't know that the law says about this tbh but if guess it's down to contractual negotiation. If you want 8 weeks you'll need to ask for it and your employer will need to agree to it.

I've met him. I think you're being overly polite there

Become a school teacher, no problem with holidays then.

Sick pay isn't guaranteed in your job.
