Not cynical and really not sure why you are bothered.

The UK has a history of having the candidates and their supporters plus journalists, tv cameras and some independent observers at counts. In fact they have an issue that more people want to attend them and see what's going on than there are spaces.

Hence all vote rigging has to happen before the votes get into the ballot box. Hence the dirty campaigns, mini-buses to out to vote, other ways of accompanying people right up to the door of the polling station and the rigged postal votes.
