Inheritance tax windfall for Treasury after winter death rates soar

The Government will benefit from an extra £200million this year after the number of people paying inheritance tax increased

George Osborne will receive a boost in inheritance tax receipts because of a spike in winter deaths, it has emerged.

The Treasury is expecting to net an extra £200million more than expected after the flu virus hit older people particularly hard last year.

According to the Office for National Statistics it prompted the highest number of winter deaths since 1999 and most of those affected were over the age of 75.
