Memories of the 1950s (while I can still remember).

1. Ice on the inside of the bedroom window
2. Black and white TV with a 9 inch screen
3. One TV channel (BBC Ch 5 from Wenvoe, the TV couldn't receive Ch 10 from St. Hilary).
4. My dad making his & our living putting gigantic Ch5 aerials up so people could watch BBC.
5. Other people talking about "No Hiding Place" which was on ITV which we couldn't get
6. Sputnik
7. Trains hauled by steam engines.
8. Travelling on the Rhondda and Swansea Bay line from Platform 3 at Neath General to Aberavon (Seaside) on a little train hauled by a saddle tank steam loco.
9. Being stuck on a failed diesel train at Cardiff.
10. Travelling on buses and trains coz we didn't have a car.
11. Not having a fridge.
12. Rag, tag, and bobtail on Watch with Mother on the BBC.
13. Going on holiday on the train down to Tenby.

Ah. Them were the days.

13 Opening door on a London smog, yellow and so thick it was almost like something solid was coming in.
14 Buying cheese at the local grocer's and he carved it off a huge barrel shape covered in what looked like canvas standing in corner of the shop.
15 Everything in shops went in a paper bag, little was pre packaged.
16 Woolworths sold things like screws and nut and bolts - loose.
17 Going caravanning, towed behind my father's 10hp Hillman. The hill near was too steep for it. We all had to get out and stand on the pavement with lots of luggage until he came back to collect us.

PS As you know, we've still got trains hauled by steam engines in our village.
