dozens of people are filmed snatching bottles of water left for marathon runners

What's wrong with these Londoners? Half a chance and they'd be pulling the shoes off dead runners. The stuff coming out the taps must be rancid.

    Deplorable.

London Marathon organisers to beef up security after bottled water is 'stolen' from refreshment station

London Marathon organisers today promised to beef up security at future races after people were filmed helping themselves to bottled water intended for runners.

Race chiefs are investigating after footage captured dozens of people taking entire crates at a refreshment station in Deptford.

Organisers condemned the actions and said extra security would be provided to volunteers in an effort to stamp out similar behaviour in future.

Hugh Brasher, event director for London Marathon Events, said: “We deplore the scenes we saw yesterday at the water station.

“We will be investigating the matter further, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Police, as part of our event debrief.

“In future, we will be providing these volunteers with additional security measures on race day."

The video, which has been shared thousands of times on Facebook and Twitter, shows families load bottles into pull along bags at a refreshment station with children among those watching on.

Runners can be seen in the background while the water is being taken away from the roadside.

It was filmed by a volunteer, believed to be Mark Hudson, who said in the clip: “Obviously hard times in Deptford.

“Although the last coach has gone past, so the marathon runners are on their own, it's quite a sad state.”

A spokeswoman for the Met said it was aware of the video but no allegations of theft had been made.

Didn't it turn out that all the runners had passed and the organisers invited the spectators to help themselves to the water that was left over?

Then the evening standard has some explaining to do.

When I lived in the East End - the popular post marathon pastime was youngsters snaffling all available black rubbish bags and knocking on peoples doors trying to flog them

That Peckham Spring can be quite addictive. Gives a nice after glow.
Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.

Did the marathon for the second time yesterday and they have tonnes of water left over at the end race. People die from water intoxication and several have died when running the marathon. Didn't touch the lucozade as it tastes vile.

Biggest problem running though deptford and the isle of dogs were all the drunks and people smoking weed.

I'd not heard of the alcoholic, dope smoking long distance running technique, is it some new performance method that came out of Loughborough?
