    Morning All,

it's time to get a sat nav for the mountain biking.

Which one of these shall I get:

To be honest there is not much to choose between them. If you are not fussed about Strava or using it as a training tool then I'd go for the Edge 1000 Explore. Just be aware that you may need to buy speed and cadence sensors separately if you want them. Speed you'll get anyway from the GPS but having a sensor on the back wheel would be more accurate and responsive.

The combined Speed and Cadence sensor set is about £45.

Could you get an app for your smartphone that would do the same job for a few hundred pounds less?

        Hi Dave,

thanks, now my confusion, on Amazon the

Edge 1000 Explore is more expensive than the Edge 1000

        https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Expl...rmin+edge+1000

        https://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Edge...rmin+edge+1000

But on Garmin's website the Edge 1000 Explore is cheaper than the Edge 1000

Is the Edge 1000 on Amazon an old model they are trying to clear, or is it a "good" deal

        Milan.

I dunno if I want to have an iPhone hanging off the front of the bike, and call me old fashioned, have some doubts that the iPhone is designed for mountain biking

          Otherwise agree with your point

You can, but if you want accurate speed and cadence you still need to buy the sensors. You'd also need a bar mount and case for your phone if you want to be able to see it while riding. Decent ones that will actually protect your phone and still have it useable in the case are not cheap. The Garmins all now integrate with your phone via Bluetooth as well and will give you on screen alerts when you get a call or text message.

Save yourself a few quid and get a Garmin 810 ?

I've got the 800 and it's great (but no longer sold).

I have s/w installed on my PC which can generate a Garmin compatible map of the whole UK using OpenStreetMap data. Lob that on a memory card and you've got free UK map coverage* on the unit.

              * quality/detail of the OSM data does vary of course!

Potentially a good deal, but you can still get it cheaper if you go to a bike specific seller like Wiggle or Evans.

Evans do free next working day delivery, Wiggle charge for next day, but you get Haribos in every order

If you have an Evans store near you it could be worth giving them a ring to see if they have one in stock and just going and getting it. You'll be able to ask any questions about using it/ setting it up etc as well.

                    Update:

thanks to Dave's help I settled on the Edge 1000.

Prepared the business case and presented the capital expenditure request to the Board (Mrs)

who promptly rejected the request stating that until items #x, #y, #z are completed
around Chateau Benes, there won't be any funds available for toys like this
