I've often wondered this - Roulette and tipping the odds

How to win at roulette: Mathematician creates ingenious machine that tips the odds | Daily Mail Online

According to Muller, a colleague came up with the method of beating the roulette table, based on physics, which exploits the 'bet in play' rule which encourages people to gamble.

In order to entice more people into handing over their money to the house, casinos allow punters to lay a bet even after the wheel is in motion and even when the ball is released – but before it begins to drop, at which point it is 'no more bets'.

'In that second or two, there is enough information to allow a measurement and computation that will, for example, double your odds of winning,' explains Muller.

According the physicist's 'colleague', if you can rule out half of the numbers as being unlikely targets, then the odds immediately shift in your favour.

'You don't have to predict the number where it will fall. You only have to increase your odds by 3 per cent to go from losing on average to winning on average,' he said.
Now all you clever people, come up with a hidden camera, pocket computer and the software to make some money....

    Vegas, here I come!

If I remember rightly, there was an article in New Scientist in the late 80's about a bunch of engineering grads in the states that had come up with something which they reckoned could predict the landing point of the ball to within 3 or 4 numbers. it was pretty complicated though and prob couldn't be done in real life situations. Remember you need to quantify the deceleration of the ball and the wheel (which is travelling in the opposite direction). Would like to see someone come up with a way of gathering the information, predicting the outcome and placing bets in the short time it takes to spin the wheel.

Agreed, but I still believe that collection of info, prediction of outcome and placing of bets can't be done without being so obvious that it will get you ejected.

I actually wrote a paper on this when I was doing my degree. I came up with a system for winning at roulette:-)

It does actually work, but like all working systems, has some weaknesses. Basically, it's a mathematically more complicated version of 'doubling up' theory for betting on 50/50 chances (which strictly speaking don't exist on a roulette wheel) but if you play for x spins, you need to win (x/3)+1 times to win in a financial sense.

                Shouldn't be a problem.

I'm sure I remember this being done (unless it was a film) with a computer fitted in your shoe, you tapped your foot to give it information.

You're likely to find you aren't in the market for shoes when they catch you. And they will, casinos hire clever people to detect exactly this kind of thing.
