It doesn't - contract work (at whatever rate) and permanent work are completely different.

Or less than the manager at MaccyD's

BBC NEWS | Magazine | The flip side of a McJob

The average wage for a manager is £45,000, plus a car.

Due to the rise of the work permit in IT, and the millions of Bobs onshore and offshore, the job at McD is probably a much safer long term bet.

                    £180 * 220 days a year. £39.6k a year.

Take off a few grand in fees - £35k?

Add on a couple of K in "tax advantages" ( if there are any left ).

Whatever. It's not a fortune, but it's not poverty wages either.
