"HMRC is disputing Grint’s choice of accounting date and had rejected the actor’s attempt to select 5 April 2010, the year that a 50% top rate of tax was introduced. "

How did that help him reduce tax bill, if he picked period when 50% tax started?

They said Year, so I'm guessing he tried to state prior tax year, in the same year .

Because the tax year started on April 6th, 2010?

"The actor is objecting to a decision by tax inspectors to prevent him extending the end-date of one set of accounts from 31 July 2009 to 5 April 2010 — the eve of the new tax year in which a 50% top rate of tax came into force. "

I don't understand why that would matter for personal taxation where financial year is fixed anyway. He's obviously tried to gain tax advantage since £1 mln at stake, might have to ask my accountant ...

Fair point. I've met him and can say with confidence he knows a lot about thespianism.
