Blair refuses to 'undermine troops' with Iraq inquiry

The prime minister has refused to give in to demands for an inquiry into the war in Iraq because it would undermine British troops on active service, his official spokesman insisted before today's Commons vote on the issue.

The Conservatives have warned they may back the Scottish and Welsh nationalists, who have tabled a motion calling for a public review by senior MPs of the lead-up to war and its aftermath, despite having supported military action.

No, Tony the troops won't be undermined by an inquiry. YOU will be undermined.

"The only time...that a Commons motion calling for an inquiry at the height of a war was carried, the Prime Minister immediately resigned.

This was in 1855 when, after reports by William Howard Russell of The Times about the sufferings of the British Army in the Crimea, a proposal by John Roebuck for an inquiry was approved by 305 to 148 and Lord Aberdeen resigned.

That is an unhappy precedent for Mr Blair. If the Government lost this evening — and the odds are probably still against — his position would be very precarious."

Oh yeah this is the other thing you British have an obession for. Apart from taxation you also are obsessed with inquiries. Why I wouldnt be surprised if you buggers wanted an inquiry in to the inquiry that was set up to inquire about the original inquiry in to Lord Huttons Inquiry

And no, there is no point in flogging a dead horse. Feck I bet there are those who want to hold an inquiry in to boar war fiasco!

Do they even listen to themselves anymore?
A spokesman for Mr Blair said: "The important thing is that we do not give any signal that we are anything less than fully determined to see the job through."

So, even though Blair is losing, he doesn't want to be "seen" as a loser?

We all know blair is a loser BUT he does have a point about showing a united front against terrorism and the scum detonating in public places.

Just a pity some of our so called freedom fighters here fail to understand that concept

              Cr*p!

There should be an inquiry if only to show why the Post War situation in Iraq has deterated so badly - of course Blair knows he Royally fecked it up so does not want an inquiry to go and demonstrate the fact - of be such an obvious whitewash that it just demonstrates how corrupt his government really is.

It was suggested that such an inquiry should be held after the troops have come home, and therefore would not undermine them. Further it is in the Government's handling of the situation that is being questioned. Not the near impossible job the troops are doing.

Oh fark off...you and I both know any inquiry will only show the Government is right to have done what its done.

Naturally enough what will follow on from this is more bleating from the anti-war goon patrol demanding another inquiery and so on and so on and so on until they get what they want!

So have all the debate AFTER they come home...NOT while they are still there!

I think the compromise might be to have the debate AFTER Bliar has handed over to Fat Gordy, at which point GB can mutter things like "we are where we are/lessons must be learned etc. etc.", then plough on with the more important job of extorting more tax from the populace until all of our pips squeak.

How is he showing a united front against terrorism by going to war against Iraq?
