I have to agree with Brillo, American English seems to be the new standard even in Europe. (It makes me cringe to hear it)

Johnny Foreigner finds American English considerably more easy to understand than the soft, complex sophistication of "British" English. Innit?
Down with racism. Long live miscegenation!

In the same way that they find the Philippino accent easier to understand than the Indian when it comes to global support desks.

What pisses me off is coming back from deepest dark Europe and travelling on European trains the only stations I have difficulty in understanding the accents are of the ticket clerks are in London.

The need for foreigners to learn English is driven by their interest in the music/TV/film industries.

So we're safe for now not having to worry about other languages actually existing if we can't be arsed to learn them.
