Asked for names of 2 references , even before organizing any interviews. They advertise fake and non existent contract jobs in a deceiptful attempt to extract references names/leads from potential applicants .

Avoid if possible.

What you have described is pretty much the standard operating model for all agencies to a greater or lesser degree. It's part and parcel of being a contractor. I believe there is a packet of growsum doing the rounds at the moment. I'd suggest you get your hands on it before it's all gone.

Venn Group are quite clever about it. They invite you in for a chat and a coffee and the form they give you has a references section. I didn't fill it in, explaining that it would vary depending upon what they put me forward for. If they want to bait the hook, two can play at that game. I was in between contracts at the time so it was worth it to get in to see them about a couple of vacancies. At least it was initially until I found out the rates.
