I'm after a fun racing game for my ageing PS3. Specifically something I can play for 10 minutes and put down, a driving equivalent of PES/FIFA really. I don't want to be an undercover cop doing missions, I don't want to drive around the hood looking for a throwdown, I don't want to spend an hour tuning my F1 car, I don't want a simulator that requires practice and skill, I don't want to spend more time decorating my car than driving it. I just want to blast round a track, making lots of noise and ideally smashing into the other cars.

Anyone remember Destruction Derby? Now that was a game. And some of the early Need for Speed games before they went all chav-crazy and later tried to put GTA elements in it.

Any recommendations?

I came across this for anyone else interested: The Ten Best Arcade Racing Games Ever - Photo | Red Bull Games (http://www.redbull.com/uk/en/games/stories/1331582100013/ten-best-arcade-racing-games-console-gaming)

Blur, Split/Second and Motorstorm look like candidates for silly fun :)

Motorstorm is frustrating after a while, Blur is average, not played Split/Second.

Ha. I did use to like MicroMachines back in the day, that was fun too.

Not a car racing game (Space simulator is how it put) , nor is it available for PS3 (or any PS). It will play on a reasonable PC/XBox. Elite: Dangerous has a CQC (https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/features/cqc-close-quarter-championships) (Close Quarters Combat) mode which is as you describe. You also get the full game for when there's nout on TV.

Need for speed: Rivals - fulfils that criteria.

I've not bothered with the police mode, but the 'racer' mode is great for crashing around. You can get basic upgrades to make your car faster/grippier etc.

LBP Karting is more like Mariokart, with the added bonus of a track design mode. Used to love spending weekends with the kids racing on each other's courses. Four player split screen too, which made it good family fun.

I actually bought a GameCube over the summer principally for MK DD with mates. It's currently down south but I will have to pick it up... it does lose longevity playing solo though, and the randomness is VERY frustrating when playing AI rather than human opponents.

If you want something dumb and easy to pick up you might be better off with some of the iPad games. They are selling some really cool controllers for them as well.

There are a few that were good for the PS3 - Gran Turismo 5/6, Sega All Star Racing (similar to LBP Karting) but if you want a pick up and play arcade style single-player car racer, Ridge Racer 7 probably fits the bill best.

Do PS2 games play on the PS3? My kids dug out the old PS2 a few weeks back and and a few hours of fun with London Racer 2 - If you're expecting a realistic driving experience then it's not for you. If you want to muck about then it might be worth a try: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtj4VpORkBA

They were only compatible with the early 60GB and 20GB PS3s:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_and_PlayStation_2_games_compat ible_with_PlayStation_3

According to that, London Racer 2 isn't supported.

That said, you can probably pick up a PS2 for £20 from CEX or somewhere like that.

Or even dirt if you want some slidey funI've got Grid and quite like it, but played it to death a bit. Might look into Dirt.

re: XBone and Forza... at some point we'll upgrade but no idea to which platform. Forza does look fun.

Burnout crash, not really a racing game but good fun trying to get a high score whilst destroying as much stuff as you can in your car.
