    Speed Kills

Terrified driver who was decapitated in crash made an EIGHT-MINUTE 999 call as his Skoda sped along motorway at 119mph after car's cruise control 'got stuck'
But there was no evidence of electronic or mechanical failure?

Makes you worried about driverless cars. Who is going to hack into those and start murdering people?

Makes you wonder why he didn't slip the car into neutral and coast it into the lay-by.

Yeah the engine would probably be blown but he'd be alive...

Nope. It makes me wonder why you never read the article in full as it specifically says he tried doing that to no avail.

Martin Clatworthy, a vehicle data examiner and safety safety specialist for Volkswagen, the makers of Skoda, told the inquest that in the five seconds before the crash, the vehicle was travelling at 116mph and the accelerator pedal was fully depressed. He added there was no braking recorded.

Mr Clatworthy said: 'There is no indication that there was any error or problem with any of the electronic systems of the car in the five seconds leading up to the collision.

Possibly a DSG box, the gears are shifted by an electro-mechanical unit called mechatronic. I guess if the control unit has failed, shifting to neutral or park won't do a damned thing.

In Belgium I had the oil inlet on turbo (Diesel) blow. It powered up the engine something chronic and shot forward on a motorway. The only way to stop it was to keep it in gear and hard brake until it stalled. Maybe this happened to the Skoda.

Maybe chucking the keys out of the window would have activated the engine immobiliser?

Probably would have activated the steering lock.
