Legality of working remotely as if I was in UK, when actually resident in Italy

So my wife has been offered a good job in Italy. She would like me to leave my permie helpdesk job and come along. If I did that, found web design jobs via Upwork etc that I could do from home, and worked and paid my taxes as if I was still in England, would that be dodgy?

No idea how this works, but I'm hoping that (til Brexit at least) there's some sort of Common Market arrangement where it's fine provided I pay UK tax.

I wouldnt know where to start with setting up an Italian business, either company or sole trader, and seems pointless to look for work locally before I've learned the language. So if I could just treat myself as virtually British?

Any accountants here who have seen this all before?

I'd also look in to the Upwork option. I though the rates were so crap there isn't enough on there to make a living from. You'd be up again a lot of web professionals and all we know is you work on a heldesk. Doesn't seem to be viable on the face of it.

Yes it would be very dodgy, you pay tax where the work is done, simple as.

There is no tax harmony in the EU, you might as well be working remotely in China or Argentina.

Yes it would, in the same way that a foreigner in the UK building websites would tax himself in the Cayman Islands. If you don't and you're registered in Italy it would just be a matter of time before the local tax authorities would be asking for your tax return, and then it could get unpleasant.

I would visit an Italian accountant and get him to sort you out.
