Retail sales jump as Easter delivers boost for UK economy

""With inflation jumping to three-year highs we remain cautious as to whether consumers can keep up this impressive pace of spending,” said Richard Lim at Retail Economics.

“Real earnings are now shrinking and expected to remain in negative territory for the remainder of the year. Retailers will be hoping shoppers remain resilient in the face of further uncertainty."

Why oh why did I ever vote for Brexit? If only I'd believed people like George Osborne who said 100,000 jobs would be lost within a year, we wouldn't be in this ghastly mess with record employment and the economy at an all time high!

And borrowing carries on growing. Which it can do indefinitely. Yes Sir. Its like the universe.

Spend spend spend. Vivian Nicholson would be proud.

I have the feeling it will go on indefinitely (in the UK) because with every generation the appetite and acceptance of debt is greater and greater and therefore with every generation we'll come up with more creative debt backed solutions to problems, eg multigenerational mortgages etc

So I guess the solution will be more creative debt products with the market will lap up and so the merry go round will continue

you know in the old days the bubble would pop but these days they just create more debt solutions and keep the carousel moving

And the UK is importing more that ever! At least in GBP terms.

I'm debt free apart from a small mortgage.

I have a credit card but haven't used it in the last 10 years and I use it only as a last line of defence that I hope I never have to use.

The debt that young people rack up completely recklessly always astounds me. I know a girl of 22, a teacher, who is spending the summer touring South America and she's funding the whole trip on her credit card. "Cos I'm worf it", presumably.

My upcoming triip to an as yet undecided Greek Island will entirely be based on what I can afford to pay fo from the flights to the hotel and the food and drink to the summer fashions I'll be sporting.

I can't help that having lived within m means, at some point I'm going to get clobbered for the fecklessness of others some time soon.
