May unveils offer on EU citizens - BBC News

PM Theresa May has told EU leaders any EU citizen living in UK for five years will be given "settled EU status".
The new immigration status would grant them rights to stay in the UK and get health, education and other benefits after Brexit.
But it is not clear what the cut-off date would be.
Mrs May made clear the proposals would be adopted only if the same rights were granted to UK citizens in other EU states, it is understood.
And to hell with everyone else presumably. So much for May wanting to guarantee the rights of all EU citizens already in the UK.

My father and step-mother moved to France 3 years ago, obviously under the assumption that the rights they were given were permanent. So depending on exactly when the cut off is they may well now be screwed.
Will work inside IR35. Or for food.

The EU have made a very generous offer indeed to UK citizens.

So 1.2 million Brits in Europe (of which 225k are in Ireland which doesn't really count) versus 3.2 million EU citizens here
      Not really comparable for negotiation
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

        And largely 1.2M pensioners v 3M workers.

Anybody who has relocated permanently from UK to Europe more than 5 years ago is entitled to permanent residency in EU. Anybody who has relocated more recently than that - well, you were taking a chance given there was appetite for an EU referendum 3 years ago, and if you've only been there 3 years you have not had time to go bamboo- just sell up and go home. Put it down to experience. If you can't sell up then rent it out and use the income to rent a place in the UK. If these sums don't add up, i'm afraid you didn't think it through.

This is really a fair offer. 'Settled Status' should be provided based on validating their tax contribution for five years and not just their physical presence.

I'm on a few EU citizen forums on FB. It's so vague that no one knows what's going to happen. Frank and fair??

Should the same rules be applied to Brits living abroad, or even just Brits in general?

I would say "Yes". Similar rules to be applied to Brits living abroad (EU). It's up to those EU member countries to decide. It's only fair if it mirrors similar conditions.
