Britain must have a 'grown-up debate' about tax increases...

Britain must have a 'grown-up debate' about tax increases to fund public services, Philip Hammond says

Philip Hammond has said that Britain needs to have a "grown-up debate" about whether people are prepared to pay more tax to increase public spending amid a deepening Cabinet split.

The Chancellor said that all voters need to consider the "serious question" of whether they are prepared accept higher taxes to ease austerity after "seven years of hard slog".

In a speech on Monday night he said: "The serious question to the electorate cannot be 'would you like us to tax someone who isn’t you to pay for you to consume more?', but 'would you be willing to pay more tax to consume more public services?'”

His comments are in stark contrast to those of Michael Gove, the Environment Secretary, who said at the weekend that taxpayers should not have to meet the cost of scrapping the public sector pay cap.

Mr Gove and other Cabinet ministers including Boris Johnson, Michael Gove, Jeremy Hunt and Justine Greening have signalled that public sector workers such as nurses, teachers and police deserve a pay rise.

And the sub letting in Greenfell was so bad they have to issue an amnesty.

We are spending more than we are earning, we either earn more or spend less the tories were saying spend less, Jezzybull labour want to demand more. Who will win?

So you blame the Greenfell for increased taxes?

There is plenty of money out there, so I favour increased taxes.

So, why can't we have a grown up debate about balancing what we (UK PLC) earn against what we (UK PLC) spend? Surely, that would be a far more useful debate to have? Why do we have an assumption that public spending must always be higher? Serious questions in my eyes. After the national debacle of Brown swapping the future earnings of my children and grandchildren for debt in order to "invest", can't we just say ENOUGH?

How about they have a grown-up conversation on removing the layers of useless middle-management from the NHS, or "area managers" from education?

The problem with public services is that the ground staff are excellent but management is over-burdening and useless. Unfortunately both parties seem to see more management as the answer, instead of culling the dead wood.

Brexiters are naturally in favour of hefty tax increases if they wish to emulate Norway or Switzerland. In fairness it is probably the only way for the economy to go.

too many of them are profit seeking as a result of privatisation. A conflict of interest right there. Do you spend all profits for patient care or do you skim off the top for shareholders.

In many ways there's no reason why the UK could not have a health care system like Germany, everyone pays health insurance to level based on their income. You want to pay more tax for better services?

What have you done for the UK except minimise your tax return and abandon it for a better life?

                    How awful!

Ironically we pay less taxes out here than if I were making the same earnings in the UK. Let alone to mention the cost of living and residing within the EU.
