Brexit and Trump have forced the EU to listen to its critics and change, admit its top officials | The Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/brexit-trump-eu-must-change-populism-wave-europe-officials-independent-a7829776.html)

The shock of Brexit and Donald Trump’s rise is forcing Europe to tackle the deep problems that drove Britons to vote Leave, the EU’s most senior officials have admitted.

Just as polls begin to signal the UK may want to stay in the union, the European Commission’s chief strategists said the bloc now realises it must fundamentally change to remain relevant to people's lives.

Might be better really if they just joined the Empire.

yup great article

Their intervention follows a poll by Survation, which showed a majority of Britons (54 per cent) would vote to Remain in the EU if another referendum was held, while 46 per cent would back Brexit.

Lets face it, Brexit is a car crash that won't go ahead.

That's always been known. Italy for years just choose to not follow new laws it did not like. The French took forever tailoring them. And the Brits got all rowdy, moaned complain and then used them.

We never got involved. Never participated. Change is better made together. United we stand and all that. Anyway, enjoy oblivion.

That has been true since the day of the result.

People never wanted Brexit. They just wanted a more equal society.

Brexit or no Brexit, inequality is growing and will carry on doing so....

Brexit or no Brexit, inequality is growing and will carry on doing so....

Brexit will mean vastly increased inequality. The people who voted for it will, in general, get poorer.
Experienced and well educated people in the South East will hardly be affected, economically at least.

Of course the people wanted Brexit, that's why they voted for it. They're not that stupid. They also did so knowing full well that there would be economic consequences for the poorer regions. Wales in particular (plus Cornwall, Yorkshire, etc) voted Brexit despite knowing that most of their handouts came from the EU, not from HMG.

Sure, they hoped that HMG would redirect some of that £350m per week their way, but they also knew that that was earmarked for the NHS so there was nothing left on the money tree for them. Very noble, sacrificing themselves like that.

This is good and I'm glad the vote has made an impact, same with Trump. The global elite and politicians aren't saying "let them eat cake" anymore, they're scrabbling to stay in power - just look at the headlines involving TM today.

It's a shame it's needed people to throw Molotov cocktails at the system to make this happen. How's TTIP getting along these days? And how about this kind of thing (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2009/oct/28/sarkozy-shower-spending-eu)?

My ideal scenario now is that positive change happens, the EU distances itself from US/UK foreign policy/NATO/intervention and Brexit takes so long it ends up just not happening after everyone's forgotten about it.

I voted leave and am glad I could be part of shaking up the establishment so they start actually catering to the people who pay them and represent instead of multinational corporations.

We did get involved and we did to a certain extent change the EU. But there is a limit to that and it's clear the EU is going to fail unless they move to a federal state and the poorer countries agree to be dictated to by Germany.
