    The Great American Eclipse

Is happening today, with the first penumbral shadow of the moon hitting the west coast right now.

Total eclipse starts on the west coast at 18:17 UK time, sweeping eastward in a narrow path across the continental USA to the east coast at 19:47

A very minor partial eclipse (4%) is visible from London, from 19:40 to 20:15 (sunset). Don't look directly at the sun without protection. Ask Brillopad for some.

Not sure whether that was such a good idea. She's said in answer to the question about the differences in size between the sun and the moon:
"The moon is 400 million times smaller than the sun. But that's OK because the sun is 400 million times further away from the earth"

Looking directly at the sun* now without protection just fine...

(Un)fortunately, the good-old British climate has afforded me some excellent natural protection - in the form of big arse clouds.

          * or roughly where I think the sun is

Maybe they're going to move it...

Brexit is having a wee in the middle of the room at a house party because nobody is talking to you, and then complaining about the smell.
