From today's Times.
When Admiral FitzRoy made the world’s first public weather forecasts in The Times in 1861 he was widely ridiculed for his forecasts that went wrong — no matter that his storm warnings saved the lives of hundreds of mariners. Public criticism grew so vitriolic that the forecasts were eventually abandoned, although as FitzRoy pointed out, forecasts are probabilities not certainties.
After the 1987 fiasco, improvements were made (new kit, more data), and the Met Office successfully predicted the Burns storm of 1990. Which was almost as powerful. I remember both - they were quite awe inspiring.

Met Éireann is now forecasting that Ophelia will become increasing destructive and disorganised, leading to complete national gridlock, so is re-categorising it from extra-tropical cyclone to Brexit.Comment

If anyone else is up to date on Fear The Walking Dead, I blame what happened to that Ophelia last week. It's payback. It's the zombie apocalypse, Z Nation style. A zombicane.
Also watch out for the sharknado.Maybe tomorrow, I'll want to settle down. Until tomorrow, I'll just keep moving on.Comment
