Breaking News - Nasa Announcement - 6pm Today

For those of you unaware there is a big announcement later today from Nasa.

Nasa announcement: How to watch the major breakthrough as it is announced live, and when it will happen | The Independent

Normally I ignore these things, but my cousin is a senior astrophysicist there and has been working on the announcement. He's just texted the family and said, I think you may want to watch this and you'd better be sitting down.

I love NASA to bits, but I can almost guarantee the response to this will be "Hey, cool". And then realisation that, even if they've found an Earth-like planet or something I'll be long dead before anything actually comes from it.

My guess it's going to be something like they have found a planet that could harbour life.

For the generation that have amazing spectacular graphics in movies. Nothing short of a live alien appearing and telling a good joke is going to impress.

Why's it got to be a generational argument? What would your response be to the above news? I mean, it's cool, but it's going to have absolutely zero impact on anything and you just know it'll be thousands of years away.

I love space and I'm very glad there are people spending time exploring it, but I guess I always feel overwhelmed by the reality that even at light speed most of these things are to far way to do anything but observe what's already happened.

Confirmed discovery of alien life would have a profound effect on a lot of people beliefs/religious views.
