    Foam on the Tiber?

To mark 50th anniversary of Rivers of Blood speech, the BBC's broadcasting all of it for first time | Daily Mail Online

Tonight, to mark the 50th anniversary of Enoch Powell's notorious Rivers of Blood speech, the BBC's broadcasting it in full for the first time in a move which has caused outrage
Radio 4’s Archive On 4 will have actor Ian McDiarmid voicing the words Powell delivered at a Conservative Party meeting in Birmingham on April 20, 1968
The reading will be interspersed with commentary from academics and others
There will be a range of views - some voices will be critical and others supportive

should be interesting from both sides.

Strange they don't want to use his own recordings where possible as his delivery is an important part of the message. I predict a lefty driven Hitler style delivery rather than the factual and almost apologetic tone he used.

Heard that pompous pontificating popinjay Lord Adonis sounding off on Radio 4 yesterday, claiming it was illegal hate speach and should be banned

I don't recall ever voting for the twat, or hearing that anyone else had, besides his chum Tony Blair!

The BBC obviously intend and assume most people will treat the speech as some horrible outrage from a distant past, on a par with apartheid.

But they may be shocked at the number of people who turn out to approve of it today in hindsight, and who is to say even the "rivers of blood" might not one day come true the way things are going?

The speech has been badly represented over the years. Powell's thesis was a dispassionate analysis of allowing excessive immigration and the threats that posed to the UK for housing, health and social support, and the risks of building enclaves of non-UK nationals who weren't assimilating a basic UK cultural outlook - including using English. You would find it hard to disprove that position in the UK as it is now. He was actually making a very valid and accurately argued prediction

It was not racist by any definition, unless talking about anyone not of long-term UK descent is racist. Given the twittersphere and the uneducated twits that inhabit it, this will not turn out well.
      Blog? What blog...?

Well, this thread could provide an interesting list of posters....

        From the Mail link:

Whatever one thought of Powell’s often highly divisive views — in particular the notorious ‘Rivers of Blood’ speech about immigration, for which he was rightly accused of stirring up racial hatred
Rightly accused of stirring up racial hatred.

Seems to me, if the BBC are going to broadcast a speech that even at that time was considered to stir up racial hatred, the right-wing snowflakes here shouldn’t be surprised if it continues to stir up opposition to that hatred.

            hmm lets see

            https://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/...od-speech.html

The supreme function of statesmanship is to provide against preventable evils.
            Agree

In seeking to do so, it encounters obstacles which are deeply rooted in human nature.
            spot on

Above all, people are disposed to mistake predicting troubles for causing troubles and even for desiring troubles: "If only," they love to think, "if only people wouldn't talk about it, it probably wouldn't happen."

Perhaps this habit goes back to the primitive belief that the word and the thing, the name and the object, are identical.
well that is certain posters to a T

I can already hear the chorus of execration. How dare I say such a horrible thing? How dare I stir up trouble and inflame feelings by repeating such a conversation?
            oh yesss

In 15 or 20 years, on present trends, there will be in this country three and a half million Commonwealth immigrants and their descendants. That is not my figure. That is the official figure given to parliament by the spokesman of the Registrar General's Office.

There is no comparable official figure for the year 2000, but it must be in the region of five to seven million, approximately one-tenth of the whole population, and approaching that of Greater London.
pretty close to the "official figure"

Of course, it will not be evenly distributed from Margate to Aberystwyth and from Penzance to Aberdeen. Whole areas, towns and parts of towns across England will be occupied by sections of the immigrant and immigrant-descended population.
Ghettos who would of thought it possible?

The natural and rational first question with a nation confronted by such a prospect is to ask: "How can its dimensions be reduced?" Granted it be not wholly preventable, can it be limited, bearing in mind that numbers are of the essence: the significance and consequences of an alien element introduced into a country or population are profoundly different according to whether that element is 1 per cent or 10 per cent.
those social scientists that agreed with him must be racists!

whilst later some of the language he uses is inappropriate now, it was in widespread use then.

As he mentioned his recommendations were official Conservative policy at the time.

At no time does he suggest any harm come to anyone based on their race just that we should limit immigration or see conflict & bloodshed because that was the natural result of high immigration and lack of integration. I believe he was proven right by history.

We have had race riots, Police unwilling to prosecute minorities and we have gang warfare across the country what do you think?

              whoops

Jacob Rees Mogg describes Enoch's speech as evil

Breitbart commentators now in a bit of a quandry. Looks like Tommy Robinson is their new standard bearer.

That will lose him a lot of votes!

A BBC Panorama poll from late 1968 revealed that 74 per cent of the British public agreed with Powell, to the chagrin of establishment types like William Rees-Mogg,

I wonder if the BBC will dare do another poll now? Might be interesting.

Calling a racist a racist will lose votes? I think that says more about you than you think....

You’re fond of quotes, here’s one from Tony Benn:

The flag of racialism which has been hoisted in Wolverhampton is beginning to look like the one that fluttered 25 years ago over Dachau and Belsen. If we do not speak up now against the filthy and obscene racialist propaganda ... the forces of hatred will mark up their first success and mobilise their first offensive. ...

Actually for a leftie I had some respect for him but sometimes he hits the mark, sometimes he misses.

                    Here are a few more

The Marxist analysis has got nothing to do with what happened in Stalin's Russia: it's like blaming Jesus Christ for the Inquisition in Spain.

All war represents a failure of diplomacy.

as you can see he was often hopelessly off mark.

You note he compared him to Hitler for encouraging the government to control & plan immigration or representing his constituents?

                    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverhampton

                    Population (mid 2014 estimate)
                    • Total 256,600 (59th)
                    • Density 3,407/km2 (8,820/sq mi)
                    • Ethnicity
                    (2011 census)[1]
                    68% White (64.5% White British)
                    17.5% South Asian
                    6.9% Black
                    2.5% Chinese or other
                    5.1% Mixed Race

So was he right to say it would have a serious effect on his constituents?
