There seem to be more passengers than ever before and prices keep going up. Yet they still manage to lose money?

money flows out as dividends rather than lost, whereas it should be used for investment

You can't pay dividends without a profit.

And profit is what gets reinvested into the business, unless you’ve paid it all out to your shareholders.

The last time this happened the East Coast Mainline operation actually returned money to the treasury rather than receiving it in subsidies.

Until today Virgin Trains East Coast has paid about £1bn to the Treasury. Unfortunately that includes £200m from Stagecoach's own reserves as they haven't sold enough tickets themselves.

The East Coast line (trains side) is profitable mind you so it should be with a Monday morning returning costing £340. The track and Network rail itself is a different matter

The money that should have been invested is what Stagecoach/Virgin paid the government to run the franchise.
