Yeah that'll all change when you have the interviews and you realise that one of them is based in Belgium (the tiny detail the agent forgot to mention) and the other is ideal, yet strangely they are only willing to pay you 5% of what they actually put you forward for.

    Grrrrr

I think I've finally turned into an old cynic!!

Edit: ps - good luck though

one question for the oldies here, are you guys choosy re-which organisation to work for?? I have lots of blue chip companies & investment banks on my CV, but would it harm if I take a contract for a retail organisation if they pay OK, or should I hold on for an offer from a fancy company??

I'm not fussy - I just go where the money is. And in my experience, the bigger the company, the more wankery the boss is!

            Criteria for jobs:
            Blue Chip (only)
            Rate
            Location
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

Blue chip end-client logos look far more impressive on my marketing literature than companies no one has ever heard of outside their particular niche.

I wouldn't discount smaller companies or non-household name niche globals if you get decent offers to contract there, but too many of them on a CV can kill it dead eventually because it makes you look like you can't hack it with the big guns and don't get offers from them.

Actually it's good to have a mixture. I have had a few smaller company contracts. It's good because you gain far wider experience in a shorter space of time. Most large companies won't let you install network cables and routers, provision firewalls, install unix operating systems, etc. if that's not your area of specialisation.

Also, it gives a bit of variety so that you can talk about something at the interview other than "and that year I worked for insurance company X"

Smacks of desperation - Blue chips tend to pay the most plus blue chips look for evidence of previous working within their sector - it's a herd mentality out there
