I wonder if the German element of this "true european army" will have access to real guns, or will they just use broomsticks again?

Who knows, their Elf in Safety might even allow them to fight after dark in extreme circumstances......like a wholesale French Surrender or the Italians changing sides again??

Otherwise it's wiser to assume that the UK wouldn't want the role of NATO to be undercut by some EU army...

As with every other issue, economy, immigration etc. this is completely ignoring the real differences between national interests.

If we pay huge sums to fund a European army it may be useful if there is a war with Russia but what if Argentina invades the Falklands again? Are the other nations really going to approve sending a force to defend it?

We aren't the only nation that, due to history, is or might get involved in conflicts that do not impact other European nations, France has troops all over Africa to support against insurgents. Doubt UK citizens want to fund those.

France's Military Is All Over Africa - Business Insider (http://uk.businessinsider.com/frances-military-is-all-over-africa-2015-1?r=US&IR=T)

And who will pay a major share of this project? Probably not the Germans.

German military is falling behind, and the US is putting it on notice - Business Insider (http://uk.businessinsider.com/german-military-falls-behind-the-us-puts-it-on-notice-2018-2?r=US&IR=T)

One more reason to get OUT.

The idea of an independent joint force that does not require diversion of too much of our own military spending might be a good idea as allows better planning.

Difficult to know the detail as it's just another vague speech but Merkel seems to be proposing something way beyond that.

Well she had better start putting her hand a bit deeper into her pocket then. That along with forking up the spondooleys to pay OUR share of the bills once we leave.
Bearing in mind the fact that the Germans as a nation are traditionally champing at the bit to get involved in pointless military escapades, they have become increasingly tardy these past few decades. Most out of character. :tongue

An interesting read. It is a pity that none of the current crop of politicians in the UK are able to effectively mobilize the youth, or youth vote, of this country. Corbyn manages to get some of the young to vote, but he is hardly the swashbuckling ambitious winner that Hitler was (at that time).

Ironic on the day the EU announces a powerful new army, the UK raises the white flag of surrender and signs a document that basically gives the EU full control of its laws. At least we know the agreement will be adequately enforced.

... and announced only two days after the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1, they don't even have manners.

Only fools would make light of a German-lead EU armed forces, unlikely to invade Poland again but quite likely to use it on citizens of Europe if they get out of line.

But "Do you support a European Army?" wasn't a question in the referendum. Voting to Leave the EU means literally just that. Nothing about European Armies. That can still happen.

Indeed

Although I imagine the snowflake liberals which Corbyn will motivate will be more than happy to round up the rest of the population who do not agree with them......
