    Italian Lakes

    Hiya,

Holiday planning for next year - we're at Monaco for the Historic Grand Prix in May and we're driving down. We go every two years and normally make it a 10 or 12 day round trip. This time my wife wants to visit the lakes in Northern Italy and I fancy a bit of derestricted Autobahn. I was thinking of doing the stretch from Baden-Baden to Freiburg im Bressau, staying overnight in Freiburg and then heading down to Northern Italy through Switzerland.

I know there's a few people here who have done stints in Switzerland and whatnot. Does anyone have any recommendations for that part of The World? - we don't really want to visit The Black Forest, we'd prefer Como, Maggiore or Garda for a few days. Anywhere particularly nice that we should consider taking in or other recommendations? Lake Como looks picturesque.

Personally, I thought that Garda was a bit tacky, and underwhelming.

Early May will be rather chilly, since it is just south of the Alps.

Maggiore is less touristy than Garda or Como, but they're all pretty nice. I'd recommend going over the Gotthard pass rather than through the tunnel. There are usually lengthy queues.

Lake Orta is rather nice, less commercialised than the other larger lakes, more Italian. Orta San Guilio is a nice place to stay

About 15 years ago, my entire family (wife + 3 youngish kids) were in need of a spot of R&R. So we got into the car and headed south. We ended up in Luino, Hotel Camin, by Lake Maggiore Hotel Luino Lake Maggiore Romantic four stars hotel | Camin Hotel Luino

It was great. Really good food, friendly staff. When we checked out, we found they'd given us one of the best suites at about a quarter of the published price. (We'd just turned up on spec. rather exhausted).

I've checked recent reviews and it still looks pretty good. When we were there the owners had been trained up in the hotel industry in Edinburgh, so spoke perfect Scottish accented English

Looks lovely. Always heard great things about the lakes bordering Switzerland / Italy.

Was not that long ago in Zürich meeting with a client, stayed in a hotel alongside Zürichsee a few stops on the s-bahn from the city centre. Evening meal, a glass of wine, the occasional ferry bus thing passing you buy, very nice.. took the picture below whilst reading yon book.

Have something similar here in the South of Munich just not as populated.

              Bardolino is very nice.

If you like Italian wine make sure you leave space in the car. There are some real bargains.

As for the unrestricted autobahn..... check your insurance. A lot of companies exclude unrestricted autobahns because Nurburgring.

Not too much of the Autobahn between Baden-Baden and Freiburg is unrestricted and depending upon your exact dates, you might hit a lot of traffic anyway (public holidays.) I would suggest taking the more scenic route through the Black Forest area, there are still some nice roads and you can still hit parts of the Autobahn for a blast (maybe save it for the way back.) As NAT said, take the Gotthard Pass, much better than the tunnel although I've never had a problem with the queues (yet) but it is interesting to watch the outside temperature go up the further in you go.

If you're going to use the Autobahn try and do so on a Sunday. Lorries are banned from using it on Sundays, makes putting the foot down a lot easier.

Lake Lugano is lovely and a short drive over to Como if you want a look.

We stayed and would recommend Parco San Marco Parco San Marco Holiday & Family Hotel on Lake Lugano

Lugano itself is in Switzeland but Parco is just 20 minutes away over the border in Italy. They have a beach where you can hire boats and the food is fantastic.
