a) How she looks is really not a factor. She's an elderly woman, her purpose is not to give you a semi.

b) Is she saying science might explain homosexuality? Which is quite different from suggesting it should be fixed?

Nope, she's saying that just as science has helped people who've struggled with their gender, at some point in the future it may help those that are struggling with their sexuality.
