Oh Dear - Bliar tells judges to stop jailing crims

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6295613.stm

Tony Blair has defended a move to ask judges to jail only the most dangerous and persistent criminals.

The prime minister told the Commons that Home Secretary John Reid was simply reminding the courts of existing sentencing policy in England and Wales.

The PM added that there would be 2,000 extra prison places by the end of the year, and 8,000 more on top of that.

The Tories called the latest decision "outrageous", and the Liberal Democrats accused ministers of "incompetence".

Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime.

I find this very strange as well:

      1. The Labour government have reduced the recommended tariff from two-thirds of a sentence to half

      2. People who would have done time 10 years ago are not now, because the Labour government are telling the judiciary to apply alternative punishments to prison

      3. Our jails are still overflowing

And yet the Labour government is still telling us that crime is falling. Hmm.

I tend to agree with the do-gooders who say that prison over crowding is because they are used to cover up in failing in the mental health system and a lack of treatment of drug addicts. There are far too many people in prison that should really be in hospital.

Surely it would be cheaper to build prisons in India and ship the convicts there. That would be far better than using land here to build more prisons. We could close down and redevelop the existing prisons into luxury flats.

The situation wont change until someone comes up with big enough bribes to the Labour party or its members. Maybe that is why there has been such a delay, they are just arguing about the size of the bung.

          Why India?

But yeah, why not! We could outsource and hire Indians to serve the sentences as well.

Good point. When it comes to foreign prisoners most of them are either Jamaican or Pakistani. So Jamaica and Pakistan would be better choices.

I'm all for outsourcing our prisons to Thailand.

Would make a lot of people think twice about committing a crime when they realised where they were going to end up in prison....

                  Possible remedies being mooted:
Release immigration detainees (thought they did already) & transfer foreign national prisoners out of jail into immigration centres

Release foreign nationals still in jail despite having served their sentances - wtf??
How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think

you would think though that people would think twice about committing a crime just for the pure fact they will go to prison never mind where the prison is!
