Legal Requirement to keep Files and Records

What is the legal requirement for keeping files, paperwork, documents, etc. from a tax point of view - is it 6 years from the end of the particular financial year the documents refer to?

Ive just chucked out everything up until April 2004.

Why? Because they were getting in my way. 60 Ring Binders full to the rafters of tulip!!

      Audit me. I dont care.

If I remember rightly its a guaranteed fine of £3000 for that if audited plus you can't defend you r position if they start to suggest things aren't in order.

            hum

Do you know guys, if its possible to scan all the papers and save them in electronic format ?

Would that be acceptable by a possible audit ?

Storing boxes of paper can be bothersome.

Plan A is located just about here.
If that doesn't work, then there's always plan B
