View Full Version : Double taxation

Any of you expats out there ever run in to double taxation with HMG and your birth countries tax scum?

I received a letter from IRD in NZ saying that I must register with them what Im earning here so that they can assess what my tax is with them.

Naturally Im loathed to do this simply because I know the ****ers will tax me on my UK income by trippling what I make and then demanding their cut.

Anyone run in to this before?

If so, what did you do?

NZ IRD tried it with me and I told them I was just above the minimum wage in the UK (didn't specify much althougn hinted at "bar work") and would they please bugger off please. Which they did.

That was 4 years ago and they haven't made any noise since.

I guess I could just run off a company statement showing just my minimum wage aye? :)

Never ceases to amaze me how governments will go to the ends of the earth to get their pound of flesh from private individuals! >:

True, but as you know, the NZ IRD is a bizarre beast. They will chase you and chase you all the way, to the end of the Earth, but then you turn back towards them, use a few choice words to describe your situation and why you think they should leave you alone, and then suddenly it's all OK! they don't even check thoroughly what you're telling them.

I compare them to someone who needs attention. Just give them a bit of your time, don't pay anything, and they'll be fine.
