    NL discriminating against graduates?!?

    More dodgy NL Social Engineering?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6458217.stm

There is controversy over moves to let university admissions tutors see the educational attainment and occupations of applicants' parents.
The admissions service, Ucas, also says its form for 2008 entry will ask applicants about their ethnicity and whether they have been in council care.

Vice-chancellors and ministers say the information helps widen participation.

Others say it can be used for "social engineering", discriminating against those with well-educated parents.

When you think about it, it makes total sense from a Socialist perspective.

I mean how do you expect thick people to compete against clever people in ejukashun?

No wonder thick people don't achieve when they have to be graded against clever people.

No, thick people should receive brain credits from the government, to help put them on an even level with the clever ones.

    It's only "fair".

    New Labour, New Ideas.

I think they are making way for a tax on intelligence. If you are thick you will get a tax credit.

To me looks like NL and their supporters in Edukayshun cant bring in overt discrimination in favour of one group or another so they are resorting to more underhand methods. The suspicion with the current Junior Doctors fiasco where they had to complete an online application to get put forward for interview was all part of some social engineering plot to weed out "undesirables".

My advice to the kidz would be to lie on the application forms

I disagree that well educated parents should be a deterrent against their kids going to university - otherwise why bother trying to do well at all?

However, I do agree that working class kids, those who are genuinely able and bright and can cope with the rigours of an academic career, should be encouraged to apply to university. It does the country no good at all for whole classes of kids to be held back just because their parents "didn't talk proper, like" and got their hands dirty for a living. This is precisely what has happened in the past because these kids didn't go to the right schools or get the right encouragement or didn't live in the right catchments.

Don't forget that a kid who is held back is likely to turn into a mastermind of criminal activity at worst if they are discouraged to do well through the mainstream channels. Otherwise they will simply coast through life underachieving and being bored and paying fewer taxes than they otherwise could. Ultimately this impoverishes us all.

My parents didn't go to university and I am the only one in my family who has. No doubt NL would have supported my application to go, in that case, but thankfully the university I applied to were already thinking along those lines in the first place. Otherwise, I may not have succeeded in getting my place.

It should be based on academic ability alone, sure financial support should be given to less well off students.

Mine didn't go to University either and it didn't make any difference for my applications. Maybe I should be feeling lucky for not being discriminated against - hang on a minute - it was completely irrelevant to my application because those questions were not asked.

If you take social engineering to its conclusion then you are going to have quotas for everything. Is that really what we want?
