    Technology Managers Stressed, Overworked

    Two out of three information-technology managers are kept awake at night because they are worrying about the performance of their applications — and the cause of that anxiety is often poorly structured companies, according to a new study.

    Sounds about right, but I would add that more than 80% of technology managers I've met know fsck all about what they're managing.

    I'd guess it's a little like not knowing how to drive a car and suddenly finding oneself behind the wheel, in the fast lane, doing a ton, and the guy behind is flashing his lights and banging on the horn: I'd be a little stressed too!

      The only way to cope with the stress to be a contractor.

      That way you're relaxed about watching the project go down the tubes despite your best efforts...

        But do remember guys and gals, do not, under any circumstances, say "Told you so" to the client, they tend to get a little peeved.

              Careful Threaded, dear boy.

              In my migration to management the thing I found most difficult was controlling the urge to wade into the technical issues concerned and fix the problem myself.

              You have to let the little bastards working for you do the techy stuff.
              (They get upset otherwise!).

                You can only tell the client that what they are doing is stupid (in polite terms of course) once.

                After that you have to take the attitude that they are the ones paying the money.
