UK company profits outside the lucrative financial sector have reached record levels, official figures show.

The net rate of return on non-financial British businesses in the last three months of 2006 was 15.5%, up from 15.2% in the previous quarter.

The Office for National Statistics said profits in 2006 were the highest since records began in 1965 - rising to a rate of 15.1% from 14.3% in 2005.

Services firms led the rise, followed by the manufacturing sector.
