        So ab + b**2 = a**2

        a**2 -ab - b**2 = 0

Is there a prize for solving this? Saddest CU poster?

There's quite stiff competition around here.

          P.S. If a/b = c/d then they both equal (a + c)/(b + d)

The Golden ratio is (1+sqrt(5))/2 and satisfies that equation. However so does the Jabber conjugate of (1-sqrt(5))/2.

You are threaded and I claim my Nobel Prize.
