Police try to block next weeks anti-war demo

The demonstration has been planned for months to coincide with the hand-over from Tony Blair to Gordon Brown. More details at:

    http://www.stopwar.org.uk

Reaction to the police decision from Walter Wolfgang, 83, who was thrown out of a previous Labour conference for barracking Jack Straw:

“The police’s position is unacceptable. Millions want a speedy withdrawal from Iraq. It is outrageous to try to keep them away from our conference."

STW will insist that the police cannot be used to shield the government from the public. In the words of national convenor, Lindsey German:

"We will not be a silent majority. We insist on our right to march near the conference."
Yes, but if people do nothing at all, they will sweep away the freedoms even more quickly!

Isn't it ridiculous for the police to not allow people to walk though whichever streets of Manchester they choose on a Sunday afternoon?

In terms of "hearts and minds" policing, this will certainly be counterproductive.

As always, not simple because that site confuses issues, linking Iraq with Iran.

Opposed to the pointless and counter productive war on Iraq, but the possibility of Iran obtaining a credible nuclear deterrent does not bear thinking about.

I do not want my kids growing up in the cold war world world I grew up in with the added risk that the opponents this time would not be a rational USSR that would have weighed the pros and cons of a first strike in terms of the worldly advantage to them but a bunch of nutjob adherents of a malign religion that could see national suicide as some glorious end.

If Iran do develop a credible nuclear deterrent I want them NUKED before they have any chance to use it.

The issues aren't confused - the war drums will beat the same tune for Iran that they did for Iraq. Scare mongering that if we don't kill them first they will kill us, despite the fact that they are too far away to do us any harm. They will also try to show them as monsters to dehumanize them, it's so much easier to stomach war if we are able to forget those are people too.

Attacking Iran will be an 11th-hour attempt by the US to reassert its superpower status in a world where this is challenged by nations such as China. War now seems to be the option of choice for a country which is the world's largest debtor nation, and whose politicians regard militarism as a means of enforcing corporate interests, not least in respect of gas and oil.

There may be little prospect of us halting this descent into hell once it has begun. Bush and his sponsors will have unleashed a war of uncontrollable savagery.

I hope I am very wrong. But if this sounds crazy, and consider what those in the White House have already done in Iraq.

Unlike Iraw there is very active development of nuclear technologies in Iran, thanks to Bliar's good friend Putin, who, in his own words, is a true democract who sadly can't speak to someone like him since Gandie died.

What makes you think that Iran doesn't already have a few Nukes stashed away. they have been trading arms with Russia and the other former Eastern block countries for years!
How many of Russia's ex satelite countries sold off the Nukes from the silo's on their soil to fund their new governments. what you have to worry about is the west selling them an efficient long range delivery system.

"Under Water nobody can hear you scream"

Ps. Iraq wasn't developing scud technology just for chem & Bio weapons!
Confusion is a natural state of being

While I support peoples' rights to demonstrate against war - and do anything that would embarrass Gordo or taint his taking of office - I'd have nothing to do with the stopwar.org.uk brigade, they're too closely linked with the Socialist Workers' Party, the Communist Party and other subversive elements, who use these events as recruitment fairs, and jump on any bandwagon to further their profile. Steer clear.

So if Iran get nukes, it is almost certain that they will sell them to terrorist organisations such as the crazy Muslim extremists in Gaza, Iraq, Syria etc. That will then make the world a lot smaller. We will open ourselves up to a far greater chance of dirty bombs, terrorist attacks that kill thousands and not just dozens of people....or worse.

People may not like Americas way but do we want them on the outside of the tent p*ssing in when things go Pete Tong in the Middle East? Remember, those crazy Muslims hate us just as much as they hate US and Israel...and to be honest, I cannot see Israel restraining itself very long if the loonies in Gaza start kicking off.

Countries like Iran, Syria etc, should NOT be allowed weapons of any type.

The war drums for Iran have been beating for several months now and are getting louder as the days go by.

While Iran obtaining a nuclear weapon is a concern, why is Israel allowed to have nuclear weapons.

The problem with the US and the West is a subjective arms policy regarding it's ally Israel and the rest of the countries in the region!
