    Brazilian plane crash 'kills 200'

.....The TAM airliner skidded off the runway as it landed in wet weather, shot over a busy road and hit a fuel depot...

Quite unfortunate that it hit the fuel depot really. Icing on the cake.

it still amazes me when im in aircraft, how on earth they do it. when u look out the window and you see another plane below you, that look like a dot or toy aircraft, you realise the magnitude of whats really happening.

somehow they get everyone in that tin framed piece of junk, with 200+ people inside, throw it about a bit and then thrown it down on a run way.

if you really think about it, its madness.

True. Do you think it will be feasible?

            Space Tourism?

Surely theres gotta be a few fatalities first. A couple of bodged flights that go a bit wrong, before they perfect it all?

I used to manufacture military helicopter and passenger airliner parts for a living and you would not believe the tolerances, crack detection, and inspection processes involved in manufacturing something as simple as a ‘shoot bolt’ (the things that hold a door in place when flying).

Aircraft are ‘over engineered’ for very good reasons and when you consider something like an Airbus A320 only weighs 40 tons unladen and almost 80 tons fully laden you begin to appreciate the design work that must go into such a complex machine, its not magic but not far off!
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson
