Real - saw this on a National Geographic documentary once.

They also showed the guy afterwards in hospital - amazingly, only some minor burns and cuts.

I have a friend in the military who met him, the victim now works in an underwater sniffer-dog training unit for the US navy. He trains scuba dog-handlers and their scuba German Shepards to find Al-Quida charges attached to the bottom of US warships, plus sniffing out other under water hazards
