    Blackle - environmentally friendly Google

Google have created a black version of it's search engine named Blackle, that works the exact same way as the original version but uses less power.

Blackle saves energy because the screen is predominantly black. "Image displayed is primarily a function of the user's color settings and desktop graphics, as well as the color and size of open application windows; a given monitor requires more power to display a white (or light) screen than a black (or dark) screen." Roberson et al, 2002

But surely LCD monitors have the backlight on all the time? In order to display black it just shifts more little bits of LC to block the light doesn’t it?

It’s a bit like closing the curtains and pretending the sun stops burning.

Are we allowed to call it "black"?
