    Leaving the UK

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/6958220.stm

More people left the UK last year than in any year since 1991, statistics just released suggest.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggest that some 385,000 people left the UK for the long term in the year to mid-2006.

Long-term migration into the UK, meanwhile, was 574,000.

The figures suggest there were 159,000 more births than deaths and that the total population grew by 349,000 to 60,587,000 - an increase of 0.6%.

Okay so 385K left and their were 159K more births than deaths and as a result the population grew by 349K. How many people came to the UK as migrants?

I make it +575K. That's a lot of people for what is a crowded island.

It actually says +574K in the article you quoted.

But it is true - our immigration policies are bonkers, and our immigration system is possibly the worst-run in the developed world.

I only come back once a month to check on the BTL's and then get the flock out of there.... so busy. I like it quiet.

Fortunately, this is compensated for by Britain having the most xenophobic population in the developed world.

They mentioned on the radio this morning that there are now more than a million Brits living permanently in Spain, and there's only 60 million of us in Britain.
