    Tiscali 1M Broadband

Has anybody else in the Guildford area noticed a degradation in service over the last couple of months?

If I try to use the internet during what might be considered busy hours my service is worse than dial-up. However at, say, 6am all is speedy.

The prat on the Tiscali helpline told me that it must be at my end because he "sees" a good service being supplied to my address!!! How could this be if it's only at certain times of the day?

Seems to me that they added too many subscriptions and the available bandwidth has reduced no? Time to move to a new provider?

Slightly OT but I've noticed at the weekends my Virgin broadband slows to a crawl.

But if I boot with an Ubuntu live cd, everything is really quick and speedy again.

    Why?

I've noticed a distinct lack of Virgins too.

Is there a general shortage or is this localised to the Cambridge area?

Cheap BB providers use traffic shaping, they restrict the bandwidth during peak hours so yes it will be slow.

I signed up to Tiscali about 18 months ago and after 3 months of pathetic service they had to agree to let me out of the contract but only after I threatened to take it up with Off Com, I now use Idnet and haven't had a problem since.

Use this to compare the 2 and you will see why!

I can’t find one worse than Tiscali nor one better than Idnet.
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired. - Cave Johnson

I think anywhere near Essex has this problem

Thanks! I am sick to death, etc. with Virgin, so I will give IDNet a go.

[EDIT] Have been on the blower to Virgin for yonks, to get my MAC Code... why am I surprised that the response time for leaving them is infinitely longer than the time I waited for a reply when I wanted to join them?

Thanks Gingerjedi. How come you had to threaten them if you'd already been with them for a year and a half?

Did you use your Tiscali speedtouch modem with Idnet service? Or did Tiscali insist on having it back!?
