Is being gay something decided in the womb, genetic if you like, or a product of your upbringing?

If it genetic, then there must be a gay gene, and if people that are gay do not generally produce children of their own, how has this gene propogated over the course of history?

If being gay is not genetic, surely it must be from the environment. Maybe it is something that happens when you are growing up, maybe a toddler.

Have any studies been made into this?
