Skills drive 'to boost workforce'

Seven and a half million training places have been made available in an attempt to fulfil a government promise of "British jobs for British workers".
The plan to upgrade the skills of England's workforce includes 3.5m basic literacy and numeracy courses.

Overall skill levels must improve regardless of the influx of migrants, Skills Secretary John Denham said.

But critics say the creation of such basic training classes points to a failure of the education system.

Under the plan, which will be rolled out during the next three years, there will also be 120,000 new apprenticeships for the under-25s and 30,000 places for older workers.

Ah, apprenticeships. F***ing great they were. Sponsored through college and Uni, working in all different parts of the business...

Only problem was, companies couldn't do anything about it if you swanned off at the end.

Apprenticeships are a great idea. Problem is you need some industry first.

My plan to address a skills shortage would simultaneously address the problems of prison overcrowding. Get the little chavs to build their own prisons on remote islands preferably. They can all live in temp portacabins whilst they carry out the construction, as escape would be impossible, and they could get time off for attaining saleable skills early. Ultimately as reoffending rates drop these buildings could be used for processing failed asylum seekers and dodgy clerics with metal fins prior to their expulsion. Easy!

3 years ago I spoke to an engineer (not IT, a s*** processing engineer - close I know ) at Thames water and they had to first of all teach British employees, amongst other things, why it is important for workers to turn up for work on time.

Solution: Make exams easier to pass

Well, you do know that apprenticeships were used as a cover for slavery at one time, which is why the government made a law that limited their length to 4 years and allowed one to swan off at the end.
