Tesco to tackle home IT support with Guys

Tesco, the UK's largest retailer, will take on electricals retailers DSGi, Carphone Warehouse and Comet with the launch of a home IT support service.

The retailer has bought PC Guys, a computer support company, and is testing the home-visit concept from a store in Bar Hill, Cambridge, prior to a possible national roll-out.

The service will compete directly with DSGi's The Tech Guys, Carphone Warehouse's Geek Squad and Comet's Comet on Call services in the fast-growing home IT support area.

PC Guys will offer support in the Tesco store, over the phone and in customers' homes.

For £30 Tesco will install a 26" TV and for £70 it will install a home cinema system. A PC disposal service is offered for £15. The retailer is already looking to recruit IT experts to beef up the service.

Tesco is also testing a new zone called Tesco Digital in the Bar Hill store, offering a large computer, electricals and mobile phone sales area, with PC Guys on hand to help, according to Retail Week, the retail industry magazine.

Tesco's move into so-called "digital plumbers" will be a blow to DSGi, the retailer formerly known as Dixons. DSGi has identified home visits as a large growth area. It plans to invest £50m in The Tech Guys over the next five years.

Tony Shiret, retail analyst at Credit Suisse, said that the specialist electricals retailers will be "very, very worried".

"If it works, it could drive a stake through the heart of specialist electricals retailers in the UK," said Shiret.

A spokesman for Tesco declined to comment on plans to expand the service. However, the spokesman said: "We want to help consumers keep up with the latest electronic trends and technologies, as well as provide support and maintenance to those who need a helping hand."

I've just scraped the scummy muck off the bottom of the washing up bowl. The accumulated greasy, hairy detritus could compete successfully with Geek Squad.

        Quiet. But could you?

Maybe we need to ask Beaker?
