    Claiming benefits between contracts

    Hi

If you have just finished a contract and have your own company
I believe you are not entitled to claim any benefits (eg unemployment)
whilst looking for another contract. Can anyone verify if this is correct?

    Thanks
    Paul

Yes - you aren't unemployed, so why should you claim unemployment benefit?

          This is complicated.

As you are an employee, no you cannot. That is the received wisdom.

However, as you are also the director of a company of which you are an employee, things change.

A director of a company who has little cash in hand and has not had any form of income for a number of months (I think it is 6) can claim Jobseeker's Allowance.

BUT you will not got anything if you or the company has savings over about £2,000 in total. And you have to sign on and go through all the tulip the Job Centre puts you through: go to interviews as a data entry clerk and all that.

So it can be done but you need to be near bankruptcy, prove you have been looking for contracts AND permanent work and have not worked for quite some time.

They will also demand to see proof of all outgoings for the past 6 to 12 months so you can't blow it on a holiday or car and then claim.

Funny how they look all so strict, yet amount of fraud in this system is staggering. Seems to me that honest taxpayers get screwed completely when trying to claim what they paid for in taxes.

IMO £2000 savings limit is total bonkers.

How can you say that? Only 89 million NI numbers in existence.

What people fail to understand (with europe too) is that paying a £1 in taxes does not enable you claim that £1 back in services at some point.

                    Is the right answer £2?
