But perhaps surprisingly, Dr Redmond says, the offspring of helicopter parents tend to be completely unabashed about their ever-increasing involvement in their affairs.

This is a very pertinent point. It's not just that parents are trying to direct their children's lives, but that the children are quite happy to go along with it. In the olden days you'd avoid pretty much any contact with your parents at all once you got to about 13-years-old. My parents had it incredibly easy I reckon.
